Global internal displacement Worldwide, in 2012, a total of 28.8 million persons were displaced from their homes due to generalized violence and human rights violations, while remaining within the borders of their countries of origin, the highest figure ever recorded. Based on the United Nations report, Guiding Principles on Internal Displacement, the international humanitarian aid community uses the following consensus definition for internally displaced persons (IDPs):
